State Seal

The Colorado State seal originally was adopted by the First Territorial Assembly on November 6, 1861 as a territorial Seal. The words & date on the territorial seal was changed to " State of Colorado" and 1876 and was adopted on March 15, 1877 by the first General Assembly of the State of Colorado.
The Territorial Secretary, Lewis Ledyard Weld, and territorial Governor William Gilpin are considered to be the main individuals responsible for creating the seal using elements of design from both the Weld and Gilpin family coat-of-arms That are incorporated in the Territorial Seal.
