There are ten different species of the Mocking bird that look very sinilar to each other. Its named for its ability to mimic other bird sounds as well as having its own sounds. The Mocking bird is about 10" in length, with a 15" wingspan, grayish upper portions, white undersides, and white patches on the tail and wings. The female has slightly less whiteness. This song bird likes to sing days and at times into the night on bright spring moonlight nights. |
The male and female work together to build thier nest. The Mocking bird uses grass, twigs and rootlets and has a bowl like shape. They build their nests in dense trees or bushes. There is 3-6 eggs per nest. they are a pale blue-greenish with brown spots. The Mocking bird is a year-round Florida resident and wills fierceley defend its nest. In 1927 the Florida state senate made the Mocking bird the Florida state bird. Several other states including Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas have made the Mocking bird the state bird.
