So. Carolina > Francis Marion National Park |
| Located near South Carolina's coast the park was hit hard by Hurricane Hugo on September 21, 1989. 135-mile-per-hour winds in a matter of a few hours destroyed many of the old tree's as well as the commercial timber production. Visitors have the opportunity now to see nature's rebuilding power as young trees that survived the storm are growing back in.
With 250,000 acres of land the park has a wide range of wild life including otters, beavers, coyotes, bobcats, black bears and possibly panthers. Great for bird watching, hiking, nature study, photography, hunting and fishing. Home to the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker, the population suffered devastating losses from Hugo. |
